U.S. lost AAA rating from S & P – update

By Steve Goldstein

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Standard & Poor’s Friday night downgraded the U.S. debt rating to AA+ from AAA and, while removing the world’s largest economy from CreditWatch, said the outlook was negative. “The downgrade reflects our opinion that the fiscal consolidation plan that Congress and the Administration recently agreed to falls short of what, in our view, would be necessary to stabilize the government’s medium-term debt dynamics,” S&P said. “More broadly, the downgrade reflects our view that the effectiveness, stability, and predictability of American policymaking and political institutions have weakened at a time of ongoing fiscal and economic challenges to a degree more than we envisioned when we assigned a negative outlook to the rating on April 18, 2011.”

—I am not a supporter of the credit agencies, but they have a good point. The political muscle game wasn’t played out at the right time and with the wrong issue.

U.S. economy gained 117,000 jobs in July – MarketWatch

U.S. economy gained 117,000 jobs in July – MarketWatch.

This saves the day on Wall Street. Jobs still weak, but this is an encouragement, at least for today. The economy is on the edge of falling off the cliff again, we need good news. The statement of inability from our party leaders in D.C. during the past weeks, didn’t help the cause.

$1.5 trillion under the mattress, no jobs – Video – Business News.

There are different theories why these companies are not investing, and questions: Is it a political agenda? What would a “tax-cut” do for this companies? More cash? Would a “tax-cut” really make them invest with such amounts of cash sitting in the bank already?

LinkedIn beats estimates with a surprise profit – Aug. 4, 2011.

Of all the social media sites, this is the one with the best perspective and that will stick. LinkedIn has a good business model and multiple sources of income. That times are rough right now, is not really an issue for the company. The site is used by job seekers and by companies for hiring services, besides other activities.

I am glad I am just below that mark.

Let’s just all hope the average retail bank will not take that as an example and do the same.

U.S. Soccer National Team. Not all bad surprises in Juergen Klinsmann’s first roster for the clash with Mexico on Wednesday. What is a surprise is that Clint Dempsey (Fulham) and Jozy Altidore (Alkmaar) are not on the list. In my opinion this has its reason in Klinsmann’s desire to find alternatives in the U.S. offense. It is commonly known what Dempsey and Altidore can do.

Threatened Defense Cuts Could Be 2012 Issue – Bloomberg

Threatened Defense Cuts Could Be 2012 Issue – Bloomberg.

We are the number one spender in military & defense spending in the world. We beat number 2,3,4 and 5 summed up. Two of the 4 following are our allies, with other allies sitting in spots between 5 to 10. To claim we cannot afford to cut less than 7% of our military budget is, mildly expressed, a scandal. If this is subject to discussion with the argument that national security is at stake, then this is nothing short of fear mongering.

Since both parties are so much into ending the war in Iraq, it can be expected that this war, or what is left of it, will come to an end, right? This alone will free up resources to cover for the cuts. One could believe an army of lobbyists is working in the background and defending an ever increasing revenue stream.

Medicaid cuts force hospitals onto auction block – MarketWatch

Medicaid cuts force hospitals onto auction block – MarketWatch.

This only opens the door for a grim look into the nations health care system and people’s worries in the future. Combining the dots in the cuts in health care and the consequences for people should make people think. In the big picture, there is no way we are saving anything with health care cuts. While Medicaid and health care related budgets might, maybe, be “balanced”, we are opening up  bottomless pits in other social services, from welfare to law enforcement. Much worse outcomes not even considered.

This is the United States of America, why again is health care not a right?

Cantona: United States can rule the world – News | FOX Sports on MSN.

Eric Cantona is right. When you travel the country and you see all the talent, there is no doubt it will happen one day. The talent is there, and was 10 years ago, the clubs are there, the intention is there and the desire is growing. With Juergen Klinsmann the U.S. now has a coach that can bring a few important things on its way. What needs to be done, is changing the structures and adjust to a more competitive system. That will take some time, but in the meantime the young players are growing. If you want to measure it, if we can add 10-15% better performance to what we have, we have a top team. In the long run, the U.S. will be on top of the ranks.

The New York Cosmos have the right idea and they are working hard to make things happen for them and U.S. soccer. The Cosmos coming back, can be the best thing for U.S. soccer.
