Cosmos Comeback – The New York Cosmos And Erik Stover Have Their Hands Full

When ever The New York Cosmos showed up on the door step of soccer they turned heads. People were watching. That was certainly true the first time around, in the 70’s and 80’s, and it is still true now. For many, the Cosmos are the birth giver for American soccer and a look at American soccer history clearly confirms that view. While there has been soccer before the Cosmos, the club created a major buzz in the 70’s when a number of super stars in Cosmos colors roamed the fields in the United States and stunned the masses. Pele, Beckenbauer, the late Giorgio Chinaglia and many others that played for the club are unforgotten heroes for New York City soccer fans and the entire soccer world.

Today, things for the history rich soccer club are different. After disappearing in the mid 80’s, the club and brand rested in a drawer. Other new soccer clubs tried to step in and help the sport thrive in the United States. A couple of years back, an English business man bought the rights and attempted to bring the Cosmos back into professional soccer and the MLS. While the soccer part of the attempt more or less failed, it created considerable buzz and indeed brought the brand back to life. The Englishman sold the club to new ownership and since then new signs of life can be registered. This time, the signs show the necessary seriousness and means.

On November 8th, Erik Stover was introduced as the club’s new COO. Erik Stover is a long time professional in the industries of sports and soccer and has shown his abilities before with the other New York soccer club, Red Bull New York. Listening to Stover’s words and looking at the activities around the club, there is no doubt that this time the Cosmos will re-emerge and take an important part in American soccer. This might not be a process of a year or two, but the  club now has the means to create a major U.S. soccer and business force.

The New York Cosmos are not only a soccer club. Also unforgotten are the pictures of the 70’s and 80’s super stars of all ways of life associating themselves with the Cosmos. The club stands for entertainment, multi cultural life, business, global flair and doing things the New York City and American way. Without denying the accomplishments of other sports franchises, there is just no other that can match its characteristics and opportunity better to New York City and America. A fact that was true 30 years ago, and still is.

The New York Cosmos, Stover and his staff will have their hands full in dealing with the expectations, opportunity and the responsibilities this club has. There is much more behind this  than just revitalizing a soccer club. Good luck, the soccer world is watching, again.

64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards: Who Will Win – Infographic

The 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony will be broadcast tonight (Sunday, Sept. 23) at 7 p.m. ET on ABC, and if you’re like us, you’re probably wondering who’s going to win.

You can guess who might be taking home the Emmy hardware tonight, but guesswork won’t be enough — we figured the best way to get a more accurate reading of the pulse of the American public would be to get a gigantic sample of TV watchers, celebrities and people in the entertainment world to tell us who they thought would emerge victorious.

To do that, we turned to digital magazine distributor Zinio, which polled an impressive 250,000 digital magazine subscribers, asking them who they thought would be the big Emmy Award winners tonight in the major categories. With such a large sample, it will be interesting to see how close these predictions are to the actual results.

Meanwhile, if you’re interested in a free second-screen experience while you watch the Emmys live, go to “Backstage Live” at Emmys.com, where you’ll see candid red carpet and backstage moments via your choice of 15 cameras. We watched it for the past couple of years, and even though that multitude of cameras won’t show you what’s happening on stage at the awards ceremony — you have live television to do that for you — it’s quite entertaining and revealing, a perfect supplement to give you a comprehensive overview of the proceedings.

Comic-Con: Films With The Most Social Buzz – Infographic

Last week’s Comic-Con continues to generate buzz in the entertainment industry (although these days, it has to compete with The Dark Knight Rises). Specifically, let’s take a look at most-discussed films at Comic-Con 2012.

Iron Man 3 reigned victorious, following its presentation late Saturday afternoon — and would Tony Stark have it any other way? Although Robert Downey Jr. entered Hall H like a rockstar, the real showstopper was Sir Ben Kingsley. Exclusive footage confirmed that he will be playing the Mandarin villain in the last installment of the Iron Man trilogy.

Superfans of the comic book were also pleased to hear Shane Black, who takes the helm from John Favreau for this lastest film, tell audiences that Iron Man 3 will go back to Tony Stark’s roots and reveal the mythology of the famous character’s alter ego.

Man of Steel is the latest reboot of the Superman story, from Warner Bros. The studio screened the official trailer exclusively in Comic-Con’s Hall H, but audiences can also catch it in theaters prior to The Dark Knight Rises.

Superheroes Of The Social Web – Infographic

Who is the most discussed Marvel character on the social web? Spiderman, of course.

Data analytics company Networked Insights has collected data on the most popular Marvel characters on the social web in the last 30 days, and although it’s not surprising that Spiderman topped the list — especially in light of the franchise’s latest movie debut — the Avengers clinched the second most socially-discussed spot.

According to Networked Insights, the Incredible Hulk is most discussed Avengers character on social media sites, followed by Thor and Iron Man. Meanwhile, the top mutants are Wolverine, Magneto and Northstar.

The firm also highlighted the most-discussed villians, with Loki — the adopted brother of Thor — taking the top spot. The Lizard and Venom rounded out the top two.

Meanwhile, social media users in New York City are chatting about Marvel characters more than any other location nationwide, followed by Los Angeles and Chicago.

“It’s been established for a while now that social media is the digital water cooler for all kinds of discussions,” Sean Reckwerdt, senior analyst at Network Insights, told Mashable. “We’re witnessing through social media the dissolution of comic superheroes being beloved only by niche communities. The commercial success of these recent Marvel films are indicating that people are willing to invest several years of their time to a franchise and are definitely willing to check out a series reboot if it is well executed.”

Social TV Highlights 2011-2012 – Infographic


With the 2011-2012 TV season behind us, networks are not only looking into ratings to gauge success, they’re also diving into social TV statistics. Which series reigned supreme with the social media-wielding viewers?

Fox generated the most comments on Facebook and Twitter from September to May for primetime series programming and all series programming, with American Idol, Glee and The X Factor leading the charge online.

“Fox is clearly a leader in social TV,” Bluefin spokeswoman April Conyers told Mashable. “But it’s also interesting to note that when you expand beyond series-only to include sports and special events, CBS jumps to the top.”

CBS ranked number one when accessing all show types and non-primetime/primetime data, propelled by the Grammy Awards, March Madness and NFL broadcasts.

What were the shows doing to attract comments? NBC’s The Voice, for example, employed an impressive social media blitz, using more than 160 social profiles for judges, contestants and show personalities, including one for judge Cee Lo Green’s cat, Purrfect. The Voice also introduced voting via a slick Facebook Timeline app.

The result for The Voice season two: 145 worldwide Twitter trending topics, 13% rise for online’s vote share and 38% jump in votes per unique user, NBC told Mashable.

“This was the first full TV season with social TV measurement, so this data serves as a benchmark for future seasons,” Conyers says. “People will be interested in tracking the growth and adoption of social TV. Having this season’s data all in one place is a useful reference.”

Korean Band 2NE1 Dominates Social at Cannes Lions – Infographic

Although the Cannes Lions Festival revolves mostly around brand innovation, there’s always room for some good, old-fashioned entertainment — especially in a location as coveted as the south of France.

Korean band 2NE1 entertained the crowd and the Twittersphere with its unique pop/hip-hop beats. The performance of their hit song “Can’t Nobody” launched the “2NE1″ keyword to the top of Cannes social buzz, where it earned nearly 3,000 mentions.

Attendees snapped pics of the band, as well as photo ops of celebrities like Jon Hamm and indie band OK Go. All the shutter activity contributed to 4,043 Instagram photos surrounding the event, which still has two days to go. So, stay tuned for our event wrap-up.
