Bing Partners With Klout, Marrying Search and Influence.

bing-kloutMicrosoft and Klout have announced a new partnership between the two companies, which will see Klout’s data get incorporated into the Bing search engine. At the same time, Klout scores will begin to take into account Bing search results and queries.

The exchange of data is part of a long-term “strategic investment” that Microsoft is investing in Klout. In a Bing blog post, Microsoft says the sharing of data between the two companies is just the beginning of the relationship. The exact terms of the deal were not disclosed.

SEE ALSO: Your Klout Score Just Changed. Here’s WhyBing already incorporates social results into its search — mainly data from Facebook, Quora, Foursquare and others. Now when you search for someone on Bing (and you have social search turned on), you’ll also see that person’s Klout score. On the Klout side, scores will take into account how often people search for that name and presumably which links are clicked on (in the case of people with the same name).

Also, experts who appear in Bing’s “People Who Know” section of the sidebar will be recognized on Klout. The changes to Klout will come in the next few months, while Klout’s data will begin appearing in Bing immediately, Microsoft says.

The number of live humans following you on Twitter might be significantly lower than your profile’s “followers” number states. This infographic below shows that many celebrities and politicians on Twitter — often with millions of followers — typically have more than 30% fake followers.

So, what’s a fake follower? It could be a bot or someone who created a Twitter account, followed some people and is no longer active. There’s a lot of faking taking place on sites like Twitter and Facebook. Anyone can buy Twitter followers using one of the many services that promises active followers for around $1,000.

This infographic from Social Selling University shows some key figures and companies that have fake or inactive followers, plus how much companies are charging to boost Twitter followings.

A new tool called Fakers, that shows you how many of your followers are “fake,” “inactive” or “good,” has pushed this issue into the spotlight. With this tool, anyone can find out how many of their followers are legit and how many are fake.

What Is Your Experience With “The New Klout” Score After The Change?

Almost 3 weeks ago, Klout changed the way they measure influence on the Internet. Some features were dropped and some were added, so claims Klout. I personally have experienced a 5 point drop and close to no movement in the score since then, by increased activity and increased engagement of my audience. RT’s, mentions, likes, comments and other vital engagement measures that, according to Klout, are important to determine the score, went up while the Klout score shows no impact.

Especially over the past three days this became obvious. While engagement on all sites increased, the score was stuck at the same number. This morning, on day 4, it went down 0.04 points.

U.S. Olympians With Most Social Media Influence – Infographic

Basketball star LeBron James, swimmer Michael Phelps and soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo take the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively for social media influence among American Olympians.

Other top influencers include basketball scoring machine Kevin Durant, swimmer Ryan Lochte and gymnasts Jordyn Wieber and Aly Raisman. This all comes from the social media analytics company PeopleBrowsr, which recently pulled data using its Kred influence measurement tool to create the infographic below. Kred’s algorithms measure Twitter reach and influence, as well as how generous users are about interacting with their followers.

On a 1,000-point influence scale, James tops out at 999, while Phelps and Solo both score 977. But Phelps beats her out with a slightly higher engagement rating. Durant, it should be noted, beats both Phelps and Solo but apparently there’s a cap of one medal per sport.

Measuring social media influence is especially relevant for this year’s Olympics, which are seen by many as the world’s “first social Games.” Social media use has exploded since the last summer games, and the International Olympic Committee has ramped up its social presence.

Some athletes feel unfairly constrained by social media sharing rules, however. National Olympic committees, meanwhile, have already booted two athletes — a Greek triple jumper and a Swiss soccer player — for tweeting racist messages from London. And, after a medal round flop, British diver Tom Daley responded to a hateful social media troll by publicly outing him on Twitter earlier this week.

Social Media And Website Search Rankings – Infographic

SEO has been an essential part of brands’ online marketing strategies in the race towards top rankings on Google search. However, a new research reveals that social media engagement connected to a website can leverage a sizable rise (or even fall) in Google rankings independently from any SEO initiatives.

About the research

Six websites were established. Each site focused on similar sized American cities and contained similar type of content and URL. During ten months the content of the websites was left alone while gradually integrating various social media channels to five of the sites – the 6th website operated as a control test and was kept clear of social media channels throughout the entire test period.

Social media channels tested:

Google+

– Business page followers

– Google+1 votes to the site

Facebook

– Likes and Share

Twitter

– Followers

– Tweets and Retweets

The Results

The research not only aimed to reveal if any of the social media channels would influence the ranking on a Google search, but also if any of the channels ranked higher than others. The infographic says it all, really: Google services unquestionably created the best ranking results in the test. Not really that big a surprise all things considered. However, the negative ranking result of gaining 1000 Twitter followers seems off considering the assumed added user relevance to the website.

Point being…

However, the most interesting finding in the test is neither the fact that Google services bring great ranking results nor that a certain amount of Twitter followers creates a fall in ranking. It is the fact that the control test-website with no added social media channels experienced a slight decrease in ranking. Point being that without adding any social media channels a site’s ranking is entirely dependent upon the SEO-efforts. To further elaborate, a successful SEO strategy should explore the opportunities hidden in the use of social media channels if wanting to secure a great Google ranking.

Are you a fan of Klout?

Perhaps, like me, you’re a skeptic. Perhaps you’ve heard of Klout, but don’t really know how it works. Perhaps you use Klout, but don’t know much about it. Perhaps you want to use Klout, need more information, but are trapped under something heavy.

Boy, have we got the infographic for you.

Everyone has influence, and Klout has made it their mission to tell each of us what that is. They accomplish this by using data from your social networks to gauge your Klout Score, which is a number between 1 and 100. The average Klout score is actually 20, so anything above this means you have more Klout than your common or garden social networker. And as your score increases, it becomes exponentially harder to increase your Klout.

Why would you want to do this? Well, that’s the $64,000 question. Cynics say that your Klout score only really matters to other Klout users, but folks who boast a high number can receive all manner of perks and freebies (although that’s mostly limited to those lucky folks in Silicon Valley the U.S.). Everybody likes perks and freebies, so many people try really hard to boost their score, which makes them more attractive to perk-providing brands, plus anyone impressed by a high Klout number, who the brands hope to target. Rinse and repeat.

Yeah, it’s all one big circle jerk. But however you feel – and I hope I haven’t influenced you in any way – knowledge is power, so this infographic might help to pull the curtain away from exactly what it is that they do to calculate your Klout score. Whether that makes the service any more valuable is something that you will have to decide. But I will say this: any system that determines that a 17-year old Canadian teenybopper has more online credibility than the political leader of the free world needs to be taken with a very hefty pinch.

And me? My Klout score says I’m more influential than Pepsi. In your face, sugar water. In your face.
